The KC Slim Lite 8’s are large expedition-grade off-road lights capable pushing out 13,300 retina-melting lumens by utilizing 18 high-performance LEDs. The updated(July 2025) V2 comes with a manual low beam mode for on road use. The 2 Light Master Kit(amazon link) also includes SAE-compliant lense filters for that purpose.
These are large all-aluminum lights best mounted to a bull bar. A rugged aluminum body, polycarbonate lens and steel mounting bracket ensure true off-road readiness that will last for many years of adventures. Each light ships with a branded black-out cover for use in jurisdictions where they are mandatory when on-road.
KC has been a recognized leader in off-road lighting for decades. I naturally turned to them when I needed a pair of lights for the bull bar of my 93′ Land Cruiser. I ended up going for KC’s recently released Slimlite 8 which was later updated to the V2 (slightly more power and manual low beam).
I recently imported a 1993 Toyota Land Cruiser I had in Africa while doing non-profit work. After a frame off-restoration, I felt the stock headlights were insufficient and the bull bar looked rather naked.
The KC Slimlite 8’s didn’t more than upgrade my truck’s looks; they also made my stock halogen headlights seem like glow worms in comparison.

Price: ~$700 for a 2-light bundle with wire harness).
A Brief Walk Around

The first eyecatcher for me was the stylish X-pattern layout of the LED’s. The “X” pattern is subliminal them in 4X4 industry and this design fits very nicely.
Considering their diameter, SlimLite 8 has a relatively low profile.

The rear of the aluminum chassis has rugged cooling fins to protect against overheating the LEDs. If need be, you can easily clean out debris with a brush.

Wire connectors use MoistureBlock® technology to maintain a secure connection even if you go “swimming”

The Heavy-duty steel brackets can be easily adjusted vertically via Allen wrench, and horizontally via the main mounting nut.
Installation and Wire Harness

I’m no automotive wiz, but this was a relatively easy DIY job. If you have a basic understanding of 12 volt principles like grounding the negative and fusing the positive wire you’ll be fine. The hard part is fishing the wire.
It took me a couple of hours, but I’m certain it would take more competent folks a lot less time than me. The two-light bundle includes the wiring harness and simple instructions to follow.
Since my bull bar came with pre-drilled mounting points, bolting the SlimLite 8’s on only took a few minutes.

The hardest part of the installation was deciding how to route the wires and where to install the switch on my dash.
Pointing

Pointing the Slim Lite 8 depends largely on preference and application. I chose to point my SlimLites for on-road use in tandem with the provided SAE-compliant lens shields that come with the Master Kit. This makes them street-legal in many jurisdictions, but check your local laws.
Beam adjustment is easily done via two Allen nuts on the side for the vertical adjustment, and the main 17mm mounting nut for horizontal adjustments.
Is the KC SlimLite 8 Street Legal?

Answer: Short answer: NO. Long answer: Yes..but only if you use their optional SAE lens cover and point the lights appropriately for highway use(check your local laws.) That said, out of respect for others, if you use them on-road with the SAE lenses covers, I’d advise having your hand near the switch to turn them off as soon as you detect oncoming traffic.
These lights are epically powerful and can easily blind oncoming traffic especially if they are not pointed appropriately. So please be careful even when using the SAE compliant lens covers
Lens Shields

KC was kind enough to send a number of lens shields for me to test out. I prefer the SAE compliant driving lens shield, because it diffuses the beam more widely, removes the center-hotspot and allows me to legally use the lights on-road in my jurisdiction.
KC has a bunch of accessory covers to choose from on their website.
I’d recommend the using clear lens shield if you prefer the stock beam pattern with slightly longer-range hot spot. It’s essentially the same as running the lights naked but adds a layer of protection from rock chips, bugs, and scratches.
The amber and yellow lens shields make a huge difference in fog, heavy snow, or dusty conditions because the light tends to punch through the particles without reflecting back at you as dramatically as white light does. I think the amber lens makes my truck look more epic but to each their own.
KC offers a bunch of more lens shield options, stone guards and even retro-style vinyl covers so you can really customize your light setup according to your unique needs and preferences.
Beam Pattern and Characteristics

The Light Temperature of the SlimLite 8s is daylight-white with no blue or yellow hues.
Naked(no lens covers), the SlimLite8 punches a long-range spot beam with moderate spill. From my experience, you should be able to spot a deer at 250 yards. Recently while cresting a knoll at highway speed, I was able to safely avoided a whitetail that would have tested my bull bar had I only been using my stock headlights.
The SlimLite 8 is a long-range offroad drive light that provides powerful illumination of the trail ahead. Long-range off-road lights like these offer you extra time to assess and respond to the trail challenges ahead. In other words, you can travel faster at night without sacrificing response-time safety.
If you want a little more “flood,” KC offers optional diffuser lens covers which do a great job of spreading the beam more widely and removing the hotspot. Since I live in a forested area, I prefer using diffusers to spot wildlife on the shoulder more easily. For wide-open spaces, I would probably run the SlimLite 8s naked to maximize beam throw.
Build Quality

I’ll keep this brief. I have found no build quality issues. These lights are solid state professional quality off-road –no plastic and no junky chinese parts. These are legit off-road lights designed to take a beating and last for years.
Conclusion

The KC SlimLite 8’s V2s are a professional-level lighting solution designed for the rigors of serious off-road environments. While there are cheaper solutions out there for off-road lights, you’ll also be sacrificing durability when the going gets really tough. .
If you are the quality-conscious type, then these are no-brainer lighting upgrades. They are super tough, look great, and annihilate darkness with an epic wall of light.
My only regret? I wish I had waited for the new V2 version which now includes a manual low beam option and slightly more max output.
